The Knowledge House’s mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders, who will lift their communities out of poverty.
 
The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education­-to-­employment pipeline in underserved communities in the Bronx NY, Newark NJ, Atlanta GA, and Los Angeles CA, neighborhoods by teaching young adults aged 16­-24 skills to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact. Headquartered in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district, TKH has served more than 1,900 students since 2014. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship focused on software engineering, cybersecurity, and digital design for adult job trainees, and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students learning computational thinking and web design.

Role Overview:
The Manager of Curricula and Instruction owns all implementation tasks around instructional team management, evaluation, and coaching and curriculum development for the Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship and Innovation Fellowship, as well as special initiatives. They work responsively with Fellowship Program Managers and instructional staff to ensure a positive and supportive learning environment.

Key Areas of Responsibility
 
Curriculum Research and Development (25%)
  • Lead technical curriculum development for TKH fellowship learning pathways (UI/UX, web development, data science, and cyber security, but additional pathways are in the making) that is on-par with industry standards and reputable  bootcamps.
  • Continuously adapt and implement industry best practices and new tools and methodologies for students, including soliciting and analyzing feedback from industry partners.
  • Plan and facilitate bi-annual curricular feedback and fellow-facing guidance opportunities with Tech Advisory Committee.
  • Work with instructors to create syllabi, lesson plans, rubrics, practical projects, assessments, , and instructional resources, and further learning resources.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Program Design and Implementation and Manager of Outreach, Recruitment, and Community Engagement to advise on technical pre-assessment selection and alignment to learner profiles and curricular content.
  • Through collaboration with Student Success Specialists and Program Managers, help create custom curriculum and lesson plans for students who may need a reasonable accommodations in classes.
  • Become intimately familiar with the functionality of the Learning Management System (LMS) and train T&L staff on usage opportunities.
  • Elevate T&L equipment and software needs to appropriate departments for support (e.g. issues with the LMS, equipment needs for each track, security and access challenges).
  • Regularly share cost estimates for T&L software, certification, and resource needs with Program Director.
  • Work with the Teaching and Learning (T&L) team to develop a library of resources for students.
  • Work with the Lead Instructors, Volunteer Impact Program team, and Program Director to coordinate industry guest speakers for programs.
 
 Instructional Staff Management & Supervision (45%)
  • Prepare agenda and resources for and facilitate a weekly T&L Team Meeting to review student feedback, share team- and org-wide updates, review and train staff on new policies, solicit feedback from instructional staff, build team culture, and collaboratively address instructional, classroom management and culture, or administrative challenges unique to the T&L team.
  • Facilitate Lead Instructor and Teaching Assistant onboarding to the T&L Team.
  • Oversee timely, efficient, and policy-aligned lesson preparation, grading, and data collection across the T&L team.
  • Monitor student-facing spaces including LMS, Slack, classes, and comments in feedback to maintain a supportive and rigorous learning environment for all fellows.
  • Review and approve Instructional Team PTO requests, coverage plans, and timesheets.
  • Conduct regular instructional team staff evaluations.
  • Maintain and update the Teaching and Learning Team Handbook with relevant policies and information, as needed.
  • Manage and participate in hiring Lead Instructors and Teaching Assistants for TKH fellowships and occasionally custom and special programs.

Instructional Staff Coaching & Professional Development  (30%)
  • Train and align all Lead Instructors and Teaching Assistants to the curriculum and lesson plan standards by training them on implementation methodologies.
  • Routinely coach instructors and identify areas of improvement in their teaching, engagement strategies, and classroom management skills for further professional development. This includes group and 1:1 coaching sessions.
  • Develop and facilitate regular professional development for T&L Team.
  • Monitor student feedback regarding instructions, Lead Instructors, and Teaching Assistants, and work with the T&L team to resolve them expeditiously and escalate to program leadership as needed.
  • Observe live classes and class recordings on a weekly basis to assess quality of instruction and conduct teacher evaluations. May be required to make site visits to observe in-person classroom environments.
  • Work with Lead Instructors and Employment Specialists to identify key career and technical competencies for work-readiness.
 
Qualifications:
Experience
  • Degree in CS, IT, or related field is preferred
  • 3+ years of experience as an educator or instructional coach is required
  • 3+ years of experience in technology curriculum development and lesson planning is required
  • 1+ years experience teaching or working with young adults and/or adult learners  is preferred
  • Experience with eLearning, computer-enhanced teaching, and blended learning approaches required
  • Previous experience managing a diverse team is preferred
  • Previous experience working with underprivileged communities is a plus
 
Skills & Approach to Work
  • Familiarity with computer science, computational thinking, computer programming, software engineering, including HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Python
  • Understanding of and proficiency with Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Skillful in using technical and non-technical assessment tools to measure the progress and performance of a diverse student population
  • Ability to independently produce high quality work, delegate, problem-solve, and ask for help when needed.
  • A passion and love for our students and their genius. A tenacious desire to smash all barriers in the way of our students accessing rewarding, high-paying careers in technology.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines in a constantly changing and fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, public speaking, and "people skills".
  • Ability to travel occasionally and participate in frequent evening and weekend activities for work-related purposes.
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, social media, and project management software (e.g. Asana); experience with Learning Management Systems.
  • Exemplary communication skills and emotional intelligence
 
The full-time salary range for this role will be between $60-70K. Benefits for full-time staff include health, dental, and vision insurance, a 2% 401k match, a monthly tech stipend, a weekly no-meeting day, and unlimited PTO days.
