Job description
Assists Production Team in the fabrication, assembly, and the movement of buildings, test specimens and testing apparatus at the IBHS Research Center. Uses basic carpentry skills, basic knowledge of residential/light commercial construction, and ability to read drawings and sketches to perform framing, trimming, and finishing tasks for test buildings and portions of buildings. Operates building movement equipment to relocate structures on Research Center campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Performs basic carpentry tasks including, but not limited to:
- Calculate material estimates from drawings and sketches
- Measure and cut wood and other building materials
- Frame test structures and displays
- Install asphalt shingles and other roofing materials
- Install trim and accessories (fascia, soffit, gutters, downspouts)
- Assists with moving test buildings into and out of test chamber as well as setup and removal of equipment and instrumentation used in tests.
- Assembles, operates, and disassembles specialty house moving equipment.
- Assists with the construction of instrumentation support structures and equipment needed for various testing as required.
- Assists as needed with the completion of tests throughout the facility.
- Conducts inventory of tools, materials, and supplies and reports any discrepancies to Carpentry Team Leader.
- Safely operates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to: forklift, shooting boom forklift, and manlift.
- Assists in facility maintenance tasks and special projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
Education:High School diploma or equivalent
Experience:Prefer five (5) or more years of experience in the construction industry. Prefer experience in residential construction. OSHA 10 Hour or 30 Hour safety certification a plus.
Other:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints and drawings.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to effectively communicate detailed instruction to contractors and technical staff, through written correspondence and verbal communication.
- Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously
- Knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software, Word Processing software, CAD software, and scheduling software such as Microsoft Project is a plus.
