Job Description
Use mathematical modeling along with structural, vibration and durability engineering computer aided engineering (CAE) applications to provide design guidance to product development (PD) engineering for automotive heat exchangers. Optimize component design to achieve customer strength, durability and NVH targets.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Through the use of FEA tools and advanced methods, conduct pressure cycle, burst, thermal cycle and vibration durability analyses for heat exchangers to ensure they meet customer’s design targets.
  • Work with PD engineering, FEA software vendors, universities, etc., to develop and correlate advanced FEA models and processes to assess pressure cycle, burst, thermal cycle and vibration durability characteristics of automotive heat exchangers and/or fluid transport lines/hoses.
  • Leverage FEA simulations to find, fix and understand the root cause of performance issues, discovered during product development and field testing, and suggest workable solutions.
  • Conduct structural / strength FEA analyses at the attachment and bracketing locations for heat exchangers to ensure there is no expected damage or failures during installation into the vehicle.
  • Look for opportunities to improve FEA processes as new hardware technology and enhanced software tools become available.
  • Support our efforts in obtaining new business through accurate and detailed FEA simulations, customer presentations and technology design reviews while protecting our competitive edge.
  • Conduct CAE correlation studies in collaboration with engineering and test operations.
  • Cascade process improvements and coordinate some training of new methods to the company FEA community.
  • Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work as a cross-functional team member.

Degree Preferred and Experience
  • Ph.D. degree in structural finite element analysis with 5-10 years of experience in the field of fatigue and durability FEA.
  • Candidate should be capable to conduct described analyses with minimal training or mentoring.

Desired Competencies, Experience, & Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the operation and function of automotive heat exchangers (i.e. fin and tube, plate to plate, plate and fin, etc.,) and fluid transport lines / hoses.
  • Have the ability to translate function, operation and customer test specifications into a CAE / virtual math model with appropriate initial and boundary conditions.
  • In-depth experience / expertise in the effective utilization of one or more general purpose CAE pre- / post-processor and solver (i.e. Abaqus, ANSYS, Optistruct, NASTRAN, etc.,).
  • Flexibility and a willingness to learn and employ new tools is required.
  • Experience with Catia V5, Creo and/or UGNX CAD tools.
  • Experience in utilizing high performance computing systems and the Linux operating system for advanced CAE simulations.

Special Requirements (i.e. Overtime, Travel, etc.)
  • Some overtime may be necessary to meet a customer deadline and/or achieve customer targets.
  • Some domestic and international travel is possible to other company technical centers, conference, training classes or customer meetings.
