The Dawes Arboretum (The Arboretum) is a treasured Central Ohio cultural landmark, with rich history and steadfast dedication to scientific research and conservation. Located in one of the fastest growing regions in the country, The Arboretum is one of the largest arboreta or botanical gardens in North America, with nearly 2,000 acres of plant collections, gardens and a wide diversity of natural
habitats for conservation, research and education.

The Arboretum is seeking a dynamic leader and visionary to serve as its next Executive Director, who will be tasked with building upon The Arboretum’s legacy of plant conservation, environmental education, and community enrichment, while also guiding the organization into its next chapter of continued growth, community connection, and innovation. This leader will be dedicated to building community relationships within a close-knit, yet also dynamic and growing community, and will focus on the successful advancement of The Arboretum’s mission and ambitions for future impact.
 
The Executive Director must excel in crafting a shared vision, galvanizing support, and driving initiatives that resonate deeply with the organization’s historic legacy while advancing the community's and organization’s future goals. This pivotal role requires a balance of visionary leadership, operational acumen, and a passion for the natural world that will strengthen The Arboretum’s role as a cherished
resource for conservation, education, and community enjoyment.
 
To accomplish this, the following themes have been identified as the highest priorities and characteristics desired for the position:
  • Visionary and Strategic Leadership - Further develop and execute long-term strategic plans that align with The Arboretum’s mission and stakeholder expectations through collaboration with the board, staff, partners, collaborators, and volunteers.
  • Community Engagement and Visibility - Continue to convene, create, and build community partnerships to enhance The Arboretum’s presence and engagement within local and regional communities.
  • Capital Campaign Strategic Management - Lead and expand the ongoing fundraising efforts to support infrastructure improvements and new projects.
  • Operational and Financial Oversight - Ensure sustainable management of The Arboretum’s resources and operations.
  • Knowledge and Passion for Horticulture - Be able to knowledgably communicate the work of The Arboretum and the organization’s mission; excite the community, donors, staff, partners, collaborators, and volunteers around The Arboretum’s history and future vision.
  • Board Governance - Support the Board of Directors providing the necessary details and perspective to fulfill their fiduciary and governance responsibilities.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required; Masters degree preferred
• Minimum of 10 years in a leadership role within a nonprofit, preferably in an arboretum, botanical garden, or similar organization
• Demonstrated understanding of and appreciation for mission-based organizations
• Proven track record in fundraising and developing relationships with various donor groups
• Strong fiscal management skills
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively engaging with diverse stakeholder groups
• Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and manage a team towards achieving excellence and growth
• Strong horticulture or conservation experience and knowledge preferred
