@Orchard LLC is actively seeking to engage an experienced Community Liaison in support of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s (MBNMS) Coastal Discovery Center (CDC). The Coastal Discovery Center’s (CDC) function provides interpretation, education, and outreach about natural and cultural resources in coastal California, from Cambria to Big Sur.

The selected individual will assist the MBNMS Education & Outreach Coordinator in planning, developing, and implementing community engagement in the southern sanctuary region (based out of the San Simeon Office). The individual will support and build upon the existing MBNMS education and outreach efforts.

As the Community Liaison, you will:
  • Assists MBNMS staff in the operations at the San Simeon office and the Coastal Discovery Center, serving as a staff lead one weekend day per week.
  • Works with the Education and Outreach, Resource Protection, and Research Coordinators to identify and report ongoing/emerging issues and serve as a representative at appropriate meetings in San Luis Obispo County.
  • Track outputs, analyze, and evaluate the effectiveness of outreach programs to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Engage with local community and agency partners on behalf of MBNMS’s education and resource protection priorities.
  • Support and expand community partnerships for the purpose of enhancing relationships, improving coordination, and promoting a positive public image.
  • Plan, develop, implement, and deliver public presentations in the community in order to ensure awareness and increased protection of sanctuary resources, 1-3 times per month.
  • Respond to public email questions and requests.
  • Serve on appropriate ONMS working groups with regard to Indigenous community engagements.

Your background will include the following.
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of experience or Master’s degree and three years of experience from an accredited college or university in biology or marine science and demonstrated experience in marine education or interpretive programs.
  • Working knowledge of physical and biological sciences, sanctuary regulations, and educational approaches related to environmental management and policy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to motivate individuals.
  • Able to attend to details, effectively prioritize a variety of competing tasks under strict timelines, and meet multiple deadlines and approval processes. Demonstrated ability to oversee project teams.
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must also demonstrate proficiency with Mac and/or Windows platforms.
  • Ability to assess problems and recommend policies and actions and skill in originating new approaches or adapting existing approaches to develop and carry out projects.
  • Must be able to work on-site and lead Coastal Discovery Center operations at least one weekend day per week.
