Job Purpose:
The RPM Team Process Engineer provides process design engineering and support for Rapid Project Management.  The role focuses on helping define problems and business cases and identify solutions for proposed projects.  The role ensures process design is robust, engaging with other technical experts as needed, and that projects designed and executed by the team will work as intended.  The role performs calculations and creates design documents and drawing mark-ups for project Management of Change (MOC) documentation.  The position will provide initial process design assurance as part of the project MOC process and ensure proper technical authorities are engaged for formal approval.

Dimensions:
The RPM Team Process Engineer is a staff function with no direct reports. The role is a key member of the RPM Team for delivery of competitive projects. The role will also be key in helping think differently on how to deliver projects in an innovative way to improve cost and schedule.  Creativity, flexibility, adaptability, communication, stakeholder engagement, technical knowledge, and ability to think causally are critical factors for this position.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
The RPM Team Process Engineer role is a key team member for delivering successful projects as part of the new Rapid Project Management work process. Successful candidates must be able to work as part of a team while also delivering individual commitments. Primary interfaces are with the RPM Team Supervisor and RPM Team Mechanical Engineer. The role will also need to engage with other project team members to answer questions and provide support, including Engineering Services & Support, Project Controls and Services, Construction, Project Operations Reps, and outside 3rd party vendors. The role will need to leverage base organization Process Engineering resources (Process Technology Engineers and Operations Support Engineers) as needed for unit and technical support.

Principal accountabilities include but are not limited to:
  • Evaluation of project business cases to quantify benefits
  • Define problems in a way that results in selecting the best fit-for-purpose solution.
  • Perform fit-for-purpose process designs, calculations, and redline design documents and drawings in support of rapid project execution, optimizing deliverables for execution and ensuring minimal technical solutions are found.
  • Lead some project MOCs as the Person Executing Change (PEC), while supporting others with design and technical review work.
  • Provide technical support during construction for process engineering or project related issues.
  • Perform Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) as part of the normal MOC process upon completion of projects in the field.
  • Assure process related redlined drawings/documents are complete and accurate for submittal into the site’s document control tool.
Beneficial skills:
  • Process design knowledge and tools – ability to perform basic analysis and engage experts for more advanced analysis.
  • Experience in the MOC work process, including serving as a PEC and performing technical reviews and supplying design packages for assessment.
  • Ability to think causally. Formal causal reasoning training is strongly desired but not required. Successful candidate needs to be trained in causal reasoning if not received prior.
  • Ability to think creatively and brainstorm new ways of working.  Flexibility to adapt to new ways of working.
  • Ability to build relationships and work well in a collaborative team environment, particularly with multidisciplinary teams of varying backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Ability to recognize and communicate hazards and risks, from both a technical and project management perspective.
  • Ability to quickly analyze and summarize complex problems to develop fit-for-purpose solutions.

Required Skills:
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US, on a full-time basis, for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor of Science degree required (preferred discipline Chemical Engineering)
  • 5+ years of experience in operational support process engineering roles in oil and gas or petrochemical industry.
  • Understanding of refinery processes and operations preferred.
  • Previous experience in a project execution environment is desired.
