XenoSTART, the preclinical division of START is a translational research organization focused on creating relevant preclinical cancer models.  Our xenograft models represent each cancer type and disease stage and are established from patients at our domestic and international cancer centers. The XenoSTART Patient-Derived Xenograft (XPDX) platform includes over 2,500 models annotated with each donor patient’s cancer treatment and outcome data and characterized using IHC, DNA/RNA sequencing, and relevant in vivo drug efficacy.

​Our XPDX models are clinically annotated and include patient treatment history and outcome and are characterized through genomic profiling, histologic analysis, and in vivo drug sensitivity to relevant standards of care. These models may be utilized in the following manner:
  • In vivo PK/PD and efficacy studies
  • In vivo efficacy panel screens (indication or target focused)
  • In licensing of models for internal studies
  • Custom model development
  • Orthotopic and radiotherapy studies
  • Ex vivo and organoid studies

We are hiring Biorepository Research Assistant at our XenoSTART location in San Antonio, TX. This role role is responsible for the organization and management of aspects related to biorepositories housed at XenoSTART including clinical and nonclinical samples and associated data sent to and generated by XenoSTART and collaborators.  This position is responsible for documentation and preparation of samples for shipment and for direct interactions with third party providers that process, test and/or characterize samples and management of deliverables and other responsibilities as needed in day-to-day operations.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Organize and manage clinical and nonclinical samples generated by or sent to XenoSTART; this includes but is not restricted to fresh, frozen, and fixed paraffin-embedded samples.
  • Maintain and update XenoSTART models list, IHC and characterization results, and data results as needed for internal studies.
  • Compile patient, model and other data related to past, current or future biobank samples, models and other data as needed.
  • Assist in organization, documentation, and preparation for internal and sponsor sample shipments including application, submission, and upkeep of all pertinent documentation.
  • Interact with pathology group regarding FFPE, IHC, TMA prep, slides, photos, OCT, antibodies, and other tasks as needed.
  • Prepare and ship environmental monitoring and pathogen testing samples.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a natural science preferred
  • Knowledge of oncology preclinical research preferred
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications; experienced in Excel
  • Good record keeping and ability to work in a fast-paced team environment a must.
  • Must be computer keyboard knowledgeable and literate (typing 45-50 words per minute).
  • Must accurately spell and type information onto manual and computer records.
