    Howard University Hospital seeks to hire a Secretary for Pathology Lab on Days who will embrace our reach and historic tradition of excellence. Collaborates with intra and interdisciplinary staff to accomplish patient care goals based on the needs of the patient and the institution. Participates in educational offerings and presents as requested.

    The Secretary: The purpose of this position is to provide administrative support to Clinical Laboratories, Anatomic Pathology and the Department of Pathology.

    • Answer telephone in a professional manner and route incoming calls to appropriate faculty and staff. Transcribe dictated and handwritten information for gross, microscopic, flow cytometric, molecular, cytology and electron microscopic reports. Screens surgical pathology billing slips for accuracy and completion of billing. Maintain computer-based files to laboratory service information and protocols. File and maintain numeric filing system for pathology reports and related documents.
    • Provide secretarial support to the Pathology faculty, residents and staff as required
    • Maintain accessions surgical Pathology specimen data in the laboratory system for editing, sign out and retrieval.
    • Contact reference laboratories to request copies of reports or to inquire about status of test results.
    • Provide customer- related services to staff, including the distribution of pathology reports to their assigned physicians.
    • Prepare appropriate correspondence for release of information and courier-related send outs to regional laboratories. Collect data for quality assurance and perform improvement issues.
    • Promote adherence to Health Sciences Compliance Program, Howard University Code of Ethics and Health Sciences Code of Ethics
    • Attend annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the HIPPA Privacy Training. Maintain confidentiality of patient, families and staff.

    Minimum requirements:
    • Two (2) college and/or Business school with courses in Business Administration, Secretarial Science or related fields of study
    • Two (2) years of progressive medical transcription experience in a health care setting.
