2025 Summer Internship — Wind Performance of Steep Slope Roof Covers Internship
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is seeking interns to join our team this summer. As an IBHS intern, you’ll contribute to our mission of strengthening homes, businesses, and communities against severe weather—which means making a difference in the lives of real people. As a Wind Performance of Steep Slope Roof Covers Intern, you’ll get experience in supporting IBHS’s research including, but not limited to:- Support for Wind Performance of Steep Slope Roof Cover projects in the IBHS small wind lab:
- Testing wind uplift resistance for an array of products including asphalt shingles, metal, and synthetic composite shingles using COMET (a fan induced wind loading machine), Instron (mechanical uplifting apparatus), and Accelerated Weathering Chambers.
Qualifications:- The candidate must be a driven undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in research, wants to develop professionally, and is able to overcome obstacles inherent in lab work.
- The work supported by the candidate will aid in the improvement of standard test methods used to evaluate the performance of steep slope roof covers.
- In addition to lab work, the candidate will perform analysis of the IBHS wind performance dataset to aid in developing a relative performance ranking of various roof cover materials which will be paramount in improving the overall performance of roof covers to wind.
- Familiarity with Python and/or MATLAB is required, and enthusiasm for hands-on laboratory work is preferred.
Preferred Majors:
Undergraduate or MA/MS- Meteorology
- Civil Engineering or related education focus
