Director of Finance | Full-Time, Direct Hire | $140K-$160K


Are you an experienced finance leader with a passion for local government finance and the ability to guide financial operations within a growing organization? We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic Director of Finance to manage all financial transactions and purchases. This leadership role involves overseeing financial planning, budgeting, debt management, payroll, revenue collection, internal auditing, and more. As the Director of Finance, you'll play a key role in ensuring sound financial management and stability.

A Day in the Life of the Director of Finance:

  • Establish and maintain an accounting system to accurately reflect the assets, liabilities, receipts, and expenditures.
  • Collect and prepare financial data for the creation of the annual budget, preparing the budget under the supervision of the Chief Administrative Officer.
  • Oversee all aspects of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax collection, pension management, debt management, banking, auditing, and financial reporting.
  • Supervise and train Finance Department personnel while ensuring effective performance.
  • Review and approve journal entries, warrant requests, subsidiary entries, and account analysis.
  • Manage accounting and record-keeping systems, general ledger accounts, and computer reports.
  • Supervise the collection of all funds due to the municipality and ensure accuracy in funds collected.
  • Participate in meetings with council, finance committee, boards, commissions, and professional seminars.
  • Plan and manage an investment program for all funds and provide daily cash flow analysis.
  • Engage with outside auditors and oversee bond preparation and related financial activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities of a Director of Finance:

  • Thorough knowledge of local government accounting, budgeting, auditing, debt management, purchasing, and risk management.
  • Deep understanding of public administration as applied to municipal functions.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards related to financial management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software, including spreadsheet manipulation and database management.
  • Ability to make critical decisions under deadlines.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills for effective team and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to manage municipal finance activities and supervise staff effectively.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in finance or accounting, with at least 2 years in management.
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office applications and financial software.
  • Ability to bond and pass a background/credit check.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a closely related field.
  • GFOA Certification.
  • CPA designation.
  • Experience in municipal government.
