@Orchard LLC, a Woman-Owned Small Business and prime contractor for Federal contracts is looking for a Biological Sampling Program Analyst to support the Greater Atlantic Region Fisheries Office (GARFO) of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). This is an early-career opportunity to establish a path to building a successful career in marine science. The Biological Sampling Program Analyst is responsible for the comprehensive review, auditing, analysis, and compilation of biological sampling program data.
As the Biological Sampling Program Analyst, you will ensure the integrity, accuracy, and representativeness of biological sample collections concerning annual sampling requests. You will assess and interpret landing statistics across various fisheries, gear types, and geographic regions utilized by the commercial fishing industry, verifying that data collection aligns with scientifically representative sampling methodologies. Your tasks will ensure completeness and accuracy in the recorded data for each sample. Your work with its meticulous review and auditing of sampling data will serve as critical components of the Commercial Port Biological Sampling Program, reinforcing the program’s reliability and effectiveness in supporting fisheries management and scientific research.
Duties/Responsibilities:- Ensure the quality of collected biological samples is consistent with program and agency standards as described in the sampling program manual and work instructions or other documentation provided by the government.
- Compile and analyze summaries of collected samples in comparison to landings of requested species using the same stratification as sample request.
- On an ongoing basis, review collected samples in comparison to annual requests and provide comments on any deficiencies found; over- or under-sampling detected; and any departures from program and agency standards.
- Compare quarterly sample requests against the corresponding tracking forms and provide comments on any discrepancies found.
- Perform bi-weekly audits of individual records of biological sampling data reported into the Biological Sampling Monitoring Database (BSMDBS) and prepare reports of audit results for collected samples for distribution and review; and manage the flow of audit resources.
- Participate in the design, testing, and implementation of improvements to the sampling program including the use of new methods, equipment (e.g., electronic sampling equipment), and software.
- Prepare and maintain documentation (e.g., sampling manual, work instructions, online guides) for use by port samplers.
- Attend meetings and conferences related to the sampling program and develop content for presentation at the same events.
- B.S. in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Oceanography, or similar
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office 365 (especially Excel), Oracle SQL Developer software, and ArcGIS
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
