Position Summary
The Actuary Intern gains exposure to multiple aspects of health insurance, including data analysis, technical skill development, underwriting, and customer service. This role supports projects of varying complexity that contribute to the success of the actuarial and underwriting departments. This is an Intern hybrid role based in Portland, Oregon.


Pay Range
 $22.88 - $25.74 hourly (depending on experience)
**Actual pay is based on qualifications. Applicants who do not exceed the minimum qualifications will only be eligible for the low end of the pay range.

Required Skills, Experience & Education:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Econometrics, or a related field.
  2. 2+ years of professional work experience.
  3. 0-1 SOA exams passed.
  4. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  5. Proficient in Microsoft Excel; experience with SAS, SQL, Microsoft Access, or similar data analysis tools.
  6. Ability to apply mathematical concepts, including statistics and data mining.
  7. Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities.
  8. Ability to come in to work on time and on a daily basis.
  9. Maintain confidentiality and project a professional business image.


Primary Functions:

  1. Assist associate actuaries with various actuarial projects.
  2. Develop an understanding of fundamental health insurance concepts, including Traditional Medicare and Medicare Supplement.
  3. Become familiar with the regulatory environment of the health insurance industry.
  4. Develop proficiency with actuarial tools, including Excel and SAS.
  5. Analyze data sets of varying sizes and complexity to extract meaningful information.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.
