Program: Central Administration

Status:     Non-Exempt, Part Time   

Hours Per Week: 21

Salary:            $25 per hour

Supervisor:  HR Development Coordinator

Start Date: Immediate

About Barrier Free Living (BFL) 

Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community.  Through its various programs, BFL provides a broad range of residential and nonresidential services to disabled survivors of domestic violence, transitional shelter to the disabled homeless, and outreach to physically disabled individuals with mental health and/or chemical addiction issues.  Services include case management; housing placements; independent living skills training; occupational therapy; short and long-term individual counseling; advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems; and referrals to outside services. 

Role Summary

The HR Assistant performs various administrative tasks to support the HR department’s daily activities. The HR assistant’s function is to maintain organization of files and documents and perform administrative tasks in order to free the HR Development Coordinator’s time for strategic planning, recruitment and retention.  The HR Assistant has frequent contact with hiring managers throughout the agency and acts as a point of contact between them, HR, and job candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Updates internal files with new employee, intern, and volunteer information

  • Screens applicant resumes

  • Schedules interviews for candidates with hiring manager and HR 

  • Assists with onboarding process of new employees

  • Posts, updates and removes job ads from job boards, careers pages and social networks

  • Manages Background check process, including expenses

  • Participates in organizing HR events and career days

  • Provides general administrative support to HR, including ordering supplies, processing occasional expenses, etc.

  • Maintains a strong boundaries and a high level of professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions with employees and external candidates

  • May be asked to coordinate with the Executive Assistant to aid the Executive Team in the planning and execution of agency events (e.g. birthday or sympathy cards, holiday fundraisers, and staff appreciation parties, special occasions, fundraiser events)

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • BA or equivalent administrative experience preferred

  • Attention to detail, and ability to prioritize competing demands

  • Strong written and oral communications skills

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively complete tasks and projects without close supervision

  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets) is preferred

  • Comfortable interacting with broad range of internal and external constituents

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality surrounding sensitive information is a must

  • Bilingual in Spanish or ASL is a plus
