    A Surgical Physician Assistant is a highly trained and skilled medical professional who works alongside surgeons and other members of the surgical team. Surgical PAs are a vital part of the healthcare team and play an important role in ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of surgical care.

    Duties:

    • Assist surgeons during operative procedures, providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other intraoperative technical functions that help surgeons carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
    • Conduct pre-operative patient assessments and provide postoperative care and monitoring.
    • Take patient medical histories and perform physical examinations.
    • Coordinate patient care with other healthcare professionals.
    • Administer medications and injections as prescribed.
    • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, documenting all patient interactions, treatments, and procedures according to hospital policy, legal requirements, and Howard University Hospital medical staff bylaws.
    • Work closely with other medical and surgical specialties to coordinate and optimize patient care.
    • Educate patients and families on surgical procedures and postoperative care.
    • Participate in surgical rounds, staff meetings and in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes.
    • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered all-inclusive.

    Minimum Requirements Include:

    • Previous experience in general surgery required.
    • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
    • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
    • Licensed to practice as a PA in Washington, DC.
    • Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
    • BLS Certification required.
    • ACLS Certification required.
