The Dawes Arboretum is actively recruiting an AmeriCorps Member to join our Conservation team from October 1, 2025, through September 26, 2026. This position, offered through Rural Action, is part of The Arboretum’s Advanced Training Program and is specifically designed for emerging conservation professionals who are seeking hands-on experience and practical skills to enhance their professional credentials and assist in career advancement opportunities.  (The Arboretum serves as the host site for AmeriCorps members placed through Rural Action.)

Through direct service and capacity building, the AmeriCorps Member will work alongside Arboretum staff to implement habitat improvements and ecosystem restoration through activities such as native plantings, invasive plant management, trail maintenance, and improving aquatic health in waterways.  

Other position responsibilities may include:

  • Organize and lead volunteer groups in field activities (seed collection, native plantings, invasive species removal, etc.).
  • Conduct vegetation and wildlife monitoring within restored ecosystems through biotic surveys, photo point monitoring, camera trapping, and other means.
  • Assist in entering data and generating written reports and interpretive materials that highlight restoration projects.
  • Participate in training and conferences as necessary to increase knowledge and gain career networking opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a basic understanding of ecological issues and a concern for restoring and improving natural areas. 
  • A degree in the field of environmental studies, biology, natural resources, or another closely related degree program is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and basic computer skills.  
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team setting.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills and is willing to adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, as well be able to hike over rough terrain as needed.
  • Must be able to lift at least forty (40) pounds.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability.
  • Personal transportation is required for this position.
  • Ability to work weekends, occasional holidays, and evenings as scheduled.
     

AmeriCorps assignments with The Dawes Arboretum are typically 12-month commitments, culminating in a minimum of 1,700 service hours. Typical work schedules are M-F, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (EST). Members must be able to serve flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends. Hours may fluctuate, increase or decrease, in consideration of seasonal changes such as inclement weather or other extended activities.

AmeriCorps Program Eligibility:

  • An AmeriCorps participant must be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent; must agree to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Be a citizen, national or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. (45 CFR 2522.200)
  • AmeriCorps members must not be listed on the National Sex Offender Registry or have a conviction of murder on their criminal records. Some host sites may have additional criminal history requirements.
  • Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps does not test for substance use as part of the application or enrollment process. However, some host sites may have additional drug testing requirements as part of their onboarding, after a member is selected.
  • AmeriCorps Members are NOT employees.

Benefits and living allowances are provided through Rural Action and may include:

  • An annual living allowance of $23,460.
  • An education award of $7,395 for a completed term of service to be used to pay student loans or for future education.
  • Health care coverage for members serving in a full-time capacity.
