POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Sr. Quality Control Specialist-Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and Welding will focus on performing inspections and tests.  You will ensure compliance with quality requirements and ensure that manufactured or procured products meet specified standards before they progress to next phase of production or customer delivery.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

NDE Inspector

  • Become certified and maintain certification at level III
  • Establish and maintain techniques to properly examine hardware, ensuring adherence to all safety and specification requirements
  • Perform inspections using appropriate equipment
  • Interpret inspection results and apply acceptance criteria identified on drawing or shop work order.
  • Utilize various NDE methods for inspection, including:
  • Leak Testing (LT), e.g. helium, pressure decay, and bubble
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Monitor NDE processes and drive continuous improvement activities while verifying all product specifications are met.
  • Maintain NDE systems in compliance with industry requirements. Monitor performance and effectiveness of NDE systems.
  • Create and approve NDE system documentation.

Welding Inspector

  • Perform internal and external inspections to determine if a weldment/structure meets the acceptance criteria of a specific code, standard, or document
  • Recommend and approve rework as well as perform visual inspection of work in progress and completed work
  • Monitor welding /brazing processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), and torch brazing to ensure they are performed in accordance with qualified procedures
  • Verify and document welder qualifications
  • Verify the compliance of base metals with the applicable specifications
  • Appraise welding joint designs and joint preparations for compliance with drawing
  • Verify proper fit-up, cleanliness, and environmental conditions
  • Verify preheat and interpass temperatures as required
  • Assure the proper control and handling of welding consumables
  • Verify the interpass and final cleaning
  • Verify cleanliness and weld surface quality
  • Oversee weld NDT examinations, proof, and mechanical testing if required
  • Oversee repair activities
  • Verify the proper performance of post-weld heat treatments
  • Conduct vendor surveillance audits of welding and inspection work, as needed

Additional Responsibilities

  • Interpret and review engineering drawings as required
  • Interpret codes and specifications in accordance with the drawing requirements
  • Assure product conformity to drawings and specifications
  • Evaluate inspection results to determine conformance to requirements.
  • Complete final inspection reports and first article inspection reports.
  • Confirm adequate documentation of fabrication and inspection activities
  • Organize and report test results
  • Document, track, and complete nonconformance reports.
  • Interface/communicate with Engineers and/or Managers to describe inspection results.
  • Conduct internal process audits to verify processes remain compliant to requirements
  • Understand basic statistical techniques sufficient for evaluation of measurement data trends.
  • Train others on inspection techniques and tools when required.
  • Keep machines and work area clean and organized.
  • Practice safe working behaviors and adhere to safety policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Other projects as assigned

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

HS Diploma or Equivalent.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
  • Nondestructive Evaluation Level II certification in line with ASNT TC-1A guidance in the following methods: dye penetrant (PT), leak testing (LT).
  • Documentation of training and experience in NDE methods
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in NDE processes, quality or manufacturing
  • Knowledge of welding codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize projects to meet completion dates.
  • Ability to execute tasks assigned with minimum supervision.
  • Requires great attention to detail and the ability to read mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to write procedures and reports
  • Good communication skills with co-workers, engineering, and various support personnel.
  • Strong computer software skills.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management on quality issues
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a DOE Q-level security clearance
  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
  • Satisfactory results of a pre-employment screening, which includes a background check and drug screening in accordance with Federal requirements (details below),
  • Ability to fulfill and promote L&A core values.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ASNT Level II certification in leak and liquid penetrant testing
  • Experience in a regulated production environment (nuclear / aerospace / medical devices)
  • Level III certification in LT or PT methods
  • Dimensional inspection experience

 

LOCATION

Work will be performed at the Centrus facility in Oak Ridge, TN.
