    The Dialysis Therapist:

    • Initiates, monitors, and terminates hemodialysis treatments for patients requiring services in the chronic dialysis center according to Howard University Dialysis Center policy under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse
    • Performs pre and post treatment dialysis machine start-up, rinsing, set-up, testing, break-down, and disinfection of the dialysis machines according to Howard University Dialysis Center policy
    • Starts and concludes hemodialysis treatments via the use of the patients’ fistula, graft, catheter, or other dialysis access
    • Observes and documents patient vital signs a minimum of every 30 minutes or more frequent if outside parameters. Documents on the patient pre, during, and post dialysis treatment detects and reports any problematic signs and symptoms and changes in the patient’s condition, or response to care to the nurse in charge
    • Administers normal saline and heparin per protocol or policy
    • Ability to recognize machine malfunction, troubleshoot, make corrections when applicable or refer for repair or maintenance
    • Documents timely and accurately on the patient’s treatment sheet, including but not limited to vital signs, weights pre and post treatment, machine tests, sterilant tests, and comments on the patient’s condition at least every thirty minutes and after any intervention
    • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area as assigned by the nurse in charge

    Qualified candidates will possess:
     
    • High school Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required
    • Previous experience in ESRD preferred. Hospital setting or related facility experience preferred
    • Dialysis Therapist certification from one of the following national certification programs required: Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT), National Nephrology Certification
    • Annual CPR certification for healthcare workers through AHA affiliate
    • Organization, or Nephrology Nurse Certification Commission OR must be certified by a national credentialing agency within 18 months of hire
    • Must be able to rotate shifts, work weekends, holidays, days, and evenings

    Required Skills
