The Microbiology Lab Supervisor:- Provides daily management and technical direction for Microbiology Services (Bacteriology, Parasitology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Immunoserology, and Virology). Coordinates all Microbiology Service activities for a twenty-four (24/7) hour seven days per week operation. Contributes to providing laboratory services to patients of all ages
- Oversees the daily operations for the Microbiology Laboratory including testing workflows, logistics, staffing, workloads and supply inventories
- Provides leadership to the Microbiology staff, creating and maintaining a climate of teamwork and efficient productivity
- Supervises staff to include, assessing personnel competency, monitoring and evaluating employee performance, and makes recommendations for hires and disciplinary actions as appropriate
- Coordinates and performs the training of new Technologists, Technicians and other support staff in theories and techniques to ensure appropriate training for assigned tasks and duties
- Prepares the Core Laboratory for inspections by CAP and other regulatory agencies
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance, and takes authorized corrective actions
- Oversees coordination of tech schedules, distribution of work and usage of laboratory resources
- Works closely with Infection Control and other departments to ensure the testing methodologies in the Microbiology Laboratory are up to date and meets the needs of the clinicians
- Develops and implements improvements to the lab workflow using LEAN methodology
- Responsible for maintaining expenses within budgetary guidelines by establishing adequate supply chain, maintaining inventory, and controlling overtime within departmental and institutional parameters
- Implements and monitors the preventive maintenance schedule for all instruments and equipment
- Makes certain that documentation of preventive and corrective maintenance is complete and available to the Microbiology Laboratory staff and inspectors
- Ensures full operation of instruments and equipment in all areas of the Microbiology Laboratory
Qualified candidates will possess:
- BS in Medical Technology, life science or other related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the laboratory as a Microbiology Technologist
- At least one year of leadership experience
- Current certification in good standing as a Medical Technologist (MT) by ASCP, CLS, or equivalent
