AUDIENCE EDITOR, THE TEXAS NEWSROOM

The Texas Newsroom – the collaboration among NPR and public radio stations in Texas – is seeking an Audience Editor. This senior journalist – a key part of our statewide leadership team – will help public radio stations in Texas reach new audiences and engage with communities that represent the diversity of the state.  

LOCATION: This position will be employed by KERA, based in Dallas TX, but is 100% remote and can be located anywhere in Texas

WHO WE ARE:
The Texas Newsroom is the landmark regional news collaboration of public radio stations across the state and NPR. It includes KERA in Dallas/Fort Worth, KUT in Austin, Houston Public Media and Texas Public Radio in San Antonio.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE:
The Audience Editor is a new position created as part of The Texas Newsroom’s digital ambition. It’s an exciting opportunity to help expand the reach of a thriving collaboration that tells stories from across the state, and to bring valuable public-service journalism to local communities in all corners of Texas.

The Audience Editor will develop strategies to help The Texas Newsroom connect with audiences we are not reaching and better listen to communities of color and younger Texans. The editor will create scalable solutions across multiple platforms – such as newsletters, social media and websites – to share with stations around the state.

This position will report to the Statewide Managing Editor, The Texas Newsroom and is FLSA classified as exempt, not eligible for overtime.


WHAT YOU’LL DO:
  • Create a blueprint for audience engagement, using the second season of KUT’s The Disconnect podcast as a test case. The Disconnect’s next installment explores whether the Texas power grid is prepared for extreme weather a year after a deadly winter storm brought the grid to its knees.
  • Create strategies to engage with new and diverse Texas audiences on multiple platforms, such as websites, social media and newsletters 
  • Collaborate with audio and digital editors and reporters at public radio stations across Texas
  • Suggest stories, formats, products, partnerships and events that will resonate with new audiences 
  • Use analytics to help us understand our audience, inform editorial decisions and expand our reach 
  • Work with public media journalists across Texas to actively incorporate diverse perspectives and voices into the editorial process 
  • Advise our journalists on headlines and SEO best practices 
  • Edit and producing stories 
  • Ensure we meet standards of accuracy, fairness and balance 
  • Develop processes and workflow for cross-station collaboration 
  • Potentially supervise a team
  • Be an active participant in KERA’s work towards to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Work in a manner that is consistent with KERA’s mission, vision and values; and maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Comply with KERA’s COVID-19 policies if ever onsite
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

SALARY RANGE
$70,000-$90,000 annually, dependent on experience
