    The Clinical Dietitian provides clinical nutrition expertise in the areas of medical nutrition therapy and patient education.

    The Clinical Dietician:
    • Conducts nutrition assessment for patients at nutritional risk.  Accurately obtains and interprets medical information pertinent to the patient's nutritional care to address nutritional risk, assess nutritional status and develops individual specialized care plans to simultaneously address several disease processes.
    • Utilizes assessment and evaluation techniques that consider the varied need of age-specific populations as well as cultural, religious and ethnic concerns.
    • Maintains productivity standards and practices, effective time management, and prioritizing of tasks; assists in achieving compliance with regulatory agency standards, including state, federal, and JCAHO standards. 
    • Monitors progress of patients determined to be at nutritional risk. Reassess and revises patient care plans and nutrition therapies as necessary. 
    • Assesses educational needs and provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups, incorporating a learning approach that considers the cultural, religious, educational, and medical situation of the patient. 
    • Serves as a resource to medical staff and allied health personnel on nutrition issues.
    • Participates in community projects and education as needed/assigned. Conducts in-services and educational presentations to hospital/department staff.
    • Assists in developing and revising patient education materials, clinical forms and protocols
    • Participates in orientation and training of new dietitians.
    • Ability to provide nutrition counseling to patients, family members and/or caregivers considering psycho-social issues and age appropriate guidelines, and to communicate effectively with other health care professionals.
    • Basic computer skills; familiarity with software, hardware, terminology, security requirements, and capabilities.
    • Effective communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
    • Knowledge of basic food production and service which incorporates principles of sanitation, safety, and menu planning within a healthcare environment.
    • Knowledge of educational concepts, methods, training materials, and resources and the ability to implement existing education and training activities for Nutrition & Food Service employees.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical dietetics and medical nutrition therapy for patients with complex medical conditions in order to plan, develop, and coordinate medical nutrition therapy intervention, interdisciplinary care plans, and nutrition education activities.
    • Knowledge of complex areas of clinical nutrition including management of critically ill and malnourished patients, and ability to apply medical nutrition therapy to patients with multiple co-morbidities.
    • Ability to synthesize nutritional assessment components to evaluate nutritional status and utilize principles of medical nutrition therapy using established practice standards and guidelines to deliver nutritional care.

    Qualified Candidates will posses:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or related field from an accredited college or university.
    • One (1) year of recent experience as a practitioner in dietetics in a healthcare environment preferred.  Dietitians assigned to a specialty e.g. neonatal, renal, ICU etc., for all or part of the duties are required to have at least  one (1) year of practice in that specialty.
    • Licensure by the District of Columbia Department of consumer and Regulatory Affairs Board of Dietetics and Nutrition. Registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
    • Membership in American Dietetic Association or any professional dietetic associated organization which must be maintained throughout the course of employment.

    Required Skills
