    Certified Para Professional Authority/Breastfeeding Peer Counselor:
    • Counsels pregnant women on the importance of breastfeeding. Facilitates breastfeeding classes and support groups.
    • Trains pregnant women throughout pregnancy to prepare them for a successful breastfeeding experience.
    • Provides support to breastfeeding women to help them choose, initiate, and continue breastfeeding through clinic visits, hospital visits, and regular telephone contacts.
    • Refers mothers to the WIC nutritionist, lactation specialist, or private physician for breastfeeding concerns beyond the scope of the peer counselor’s expertise.  Provides referrals as appropriate and identified during the screening process. Refers high-risk participants to CPA in accordance with WIC State Agency policy.
    • Interview participants to obtain socioeconomic, health and dietary information.
    • Educates applicants regarding their rights and responsibilities, including the food delivery system, WIC foods, certification schedule, and assists with group education activities as needed.
    • Performs and records height and weight measurements, biochemical measurements, such as hemoglobin or lead tests.
    • Provides basic nutrition education to non-high risk participants either individually or in a group setting with established curriculum and under the supervision of the Program Director.  Provides substance abuse and smoking cessation information.
    • Completes food prescription for standard contract formulas in powder and concentrate form. Completes default food prescription for non-high risk women and children per WIC State Agency policy.
    • Documents all contacts made with WIC participants in the DC WIC CARES system.
    • Issues food benefits in accordance with WIC State Agency policy.
    • Assures timely submission of required reports.
    • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.  The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.
    Qualified Candidate possess:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred
    • Breastfed an infant for at least four (4) months.
    • Must complete D.C. Competent Para-Professional Authorities (CPPA) Training Program.
    • Completion of an approved Breastfeeding Peer Counselor training program or a 16 hour breastfeeding education and skills training course.

    Required Skills
