This internship is an opportunity to cover the 2022 Texas legislative session alongside veteran editors and reporters. The intern will learn about policymaking and craft daily stories for radio and digital audiences in Texas and, via NPR, across the country. 

We are seeking a college student in the Austin area who is passionate about covering the issues that deeply affect Texans’ lives – and how lawmakers are addressing those topics. Our previous interns and fellows have reported on everything from abortion legislation to proposals to change the way Texans vote to bills filed in response to the state’s catastrophic winter storm. 

The fellow will be matched with a mentor and will have the opportunity to attend workshops on topics like audio editing and political reporting. 
Fellowship dates: Jan. 17 to May 31, 2023. 

This position is seasonal and part-time. It is not eligible for benefits. The position is FLSA classified as non-exempt and directly reports to the Statewide Senior Editor, TTN. 
The Texas Newsroom is the collaboration among NPR and public radio stations in Texas, including KUT Austin, KERA North Texas, Houston Public Media and Texas Public Radio in San Antonio. We air six daily statewide newscasts, and our stations partner to produce the radio newsmagazine Texas Standard, “the national daily news show of Texas.”

The position is based in Austin, and the intern will be employed by KERA, the public broadcasting organization for Dallas/Fort Worth. For more than 60 years, North Texans have turned to KERA as a destination for community engagement and lifelong learning. 
Interns play a vital role in our coverage of the legislative session, and tasks will include: 
•    Reporting in person at the Texas Capitol at committee hearings, on the House and Senate floor and at press conferences and rallies.  
•    Recording audio and producing newscast spots and audio features. Equipment will be provided. 
•    Writing news stories and features for digital audiences. 
•    Pitching stories. 
•    Responding quickly to breaking news.  
•    Conducting research and interviews to provide context and explain the potential impact of legislation. 
•    Occasionally diving into topics outside the Legislature as assigned. 
Qualified applicants must be college students enrolled in an accredited degree program in spring 2023. 
You should have knowledge of public radio, strong writing skills and a solid understanding of AP style. 

Previous experience in policy, journalism, audio or radio is preferred but not required. 

$15 per hour, paid every other week. 

Interns should be able to work 20 hours a week. Hours are flexible, and we’ll work with you to accommodate class schedules. Ideally, you’ll work two full days and one half day per week. 

The fellowship is based at KUT on the UT-Austin campus.
