SUMMARY: Our client, the Retired Public Employees Association (RPEA), is seeking an Executive Director to join their team. This opportunity is ideal for an energetic, resourceful, and passionate individual who excels in creativity, demonstrates strong leadership and management skills, and enjoys developing innovative solutions.

As an Executive Director based in the Albany area, you will be responsible for planning and executing programs for this member-driven association, as well as recruiting and retaining members and cultivating relationships with related organizations. This full-time, onsite position involves some required travel and offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.

LOCATION: Albany, NY

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create successful recruitment campaigns that will significantly increase membership and revenue and retain at least 90-95% of members.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the Board of Directors, board committees and regional chapter chairs.
  • Formulate and recommend to the Board of Directors modifications to existing policy and formulation of new policy to further the mission of the association and goals of the board.
  • Execute all contracts and commitments authorized by the association.
  • Create an annual proposed budget, ensure that all funds, physical assets and other property of the association are appropriately safeguarded and administered. Approve all expenditures pursuant to the budget.
  • Approve all communications; includes working with an outside public relations/communications consulting firm.
  • Work closely with the association’s lobbyists, testify before legislative bodies, meet with legislators and staff and give media interviews to promote the association’s legislative agenda, mission and purpose.
  • Oversee the development of and write articles for the quarterly newsletter and compose e-alerts of up-to-the minute news for members.
  • Work with the Finance Committee and our investment management firm to meet financial goals.
  • Ensure the association is in full compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations governing corporate and program activities.
  • Plan, organize and execute an annual meeting (in person and livestream), virtual all-member meetings, and hybrid (in-person and virtual) Board of Directors and committee meetings.
  • Make presentations to outside organizations designed to form alliances and increase membership.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree. Additional education, certification or degree is a plus.
  • minimum of 7-10 years of professional membership association experience including 3-5 years of successful experience in executive management or leadership positions with responsibility for membership recruitment and retention (required).

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Designed and led successful recruitment campaigns employing direct mail, social media, in-person outreach, events and other resources that resulted in significant increases in membership, revenue and staff.
  • Designed and led successful membership retention campaigns.
  • Legislative advocacy; experience with New York State legislature, municipal government and Congress a plus
  • Creation and administration of annual budgets.
  • Knowledge of association investment management.
  • Association spokesperson including presenting testimony before legislative committees and giving media interviews.
 
Pay Range: Base salary of $90,000-120,000
