General Summary

The school nurse is primarily responsible for providing students with quality health services and connecting families with community resources. Our school nurse will also assist with administrative duties as her patient schedule allows.

Roles and Responsibilities
 

  • Assess situations involving students’ safety  
  • Administer first aid, medication, specialized medical treatment and health screenings
  • Maintain all health records and reporting procedures to external agencies to ensure compliance with established regulations 
  • Help children and families access health care resources and coordinate care 
  • Refer students who require further medical attention to needed treatment 
  • Implement health care plans for special education students, children with chronic health problems and/or 504 accommodation requirements 
  • Coordinate/Provide training on various health related subjects or policies (e.g. CPR/First Aid, disaster preparedness, health education, etc.) as needed 
  • Track and manage health data to identify trends, improve student health outcomes and reduce the spread of illness.  

 


Education and Qualifications
  • Current State RN/LPN license

• Ability to manage health records, medication schedules, and daily responsibilities while prioritizing emergencies as they arise.
• Ability to assess and evaluate physical and emotional health concerns, including identifying signs of illness, injury, or potential developmental delays.
• A caring and approachable demeanor to comfort children who may feel scared, anxious, or unwell.
• Understanding common childhood illnesses, injuries, and developmental milestones for ages 5 to 12.
• Familiarity with managing conditions like asthma, diabetes, allergies, and ADHD in school settings.
• Clear and effective communication with children, parents, teachers, and staff. This includes explaining medical concerns in a way that young students can understand.
• Proficiency in handling medical emergencies such as injuries, seizures, or allergic reactions and administering first aid or CPR as needed.
• Sensitivity to diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds to ensure all students feel supported and understood.
• Ability to work closely with teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all students.
