About the Position
The Design Drafter will create and develop comprehensive engineering drawings for assigned projects while performing detailed engineering calculations using industry-standard CAD software. This role is essential to translating design concepts into precise technical documentation that guides manufacturing and assembly processes.
Key Deliverables
- Provide accurate calculations of dimensions, weight limitations, and required materials
- Develop detailed designs using computer-aided design (CAD) software
- Identify operational issues and redesign products to improve functionality and performance
- Ensure final designs comply with applicable regulations and industry standards
- Prepare workflow references and documentation to illustrate design processes
Key Activities & Responsibilities
- Perform basic and fundamental calculations for proper and economical selection of components incorporated into equipment and project designs
- Direct the efforts of draftsmen assigned to work on specific equipment or projects
- Complete detail and assembly drawings as well as general and overall layout work
- Write and release specifications and bills of material, or supervise their preparation, for assigned equipment and projects
- Design new or special products and develop modifications to existing product lines in accordance with established design specifications regarding size, capacity, and other requirements
- Complete assignments on schedule per Engineering release dates
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Two-year Mechanical Drafting/Design Technology Degree or equivalent professional experience
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in heavy equipment and/or structural design
- Proficiency with AutoCAD 2-D and INVENTOR 3-D CAD software (or equivalent such as SolidWorks or Pro-E)
- Ability to operate necessary office equipment and tools to perform drafting functions
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with others and demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to perform duties in heavy industrial settings, quarry/pit locations, and construction sites with associated air pollutants and noise levels
- Physical ability to climb on equipment to inspect and gather data
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with additional CAD platforms or design software
- Background in manufacturing or heavy equipment industries
- Project management experience
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements
Supervisor and Leadership Expectations
This is an individual contributor role with no direct supervisory responsibilities. However, the Design Drafter may provide technical guidance and direction to assigned draftsmen on specific projects.
