Serving the country’s fifth-largest media market, KERA reaches more than 4.5 million people monthly through KERA TV, KERA News, KXT, WRR and The Denton Record-Chronicle. For more than 60 years, North Texans have turned to KERA as a destination for community engagement and lifelong learning.

As we seek to recognize and reflect our audience and communities, we encourage applicants from all backgrounds and points of view to consider employment opportunities at KERA.

POSITION SUMMARY
This summer, the Denton Record-Chronicle will welcome one intern into the newsroom for a valuable experience. As an intern, you will be part of the DRC’s news team reporting, writing and generating multimedia content for dentonrc.com, the Denton Record-Chronicle e-edition and print publications, newsletters and social media.

Are you excited about local journalism and community engagement? Are you the first to volunteer for a new project? Do you want to work with a real newsroom on stories in all forms that help our audience live better in Denton?

If yes, you might just be the DRC news intern we are looking for.

This is an FLSA classified non-exempt position and will report to the Director of Content.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Interns play a vital role in making content for the DRC, and responsibilities may change on a weekly or daily basis, depending on the needs of the Denton Record-Chronicle.

  • Pitch, report and write stories across news, public safety, business and culture
  • Monitor press releases, meeting agendas and social media for story ideas relevant to the Denton audience
  • Produce photo and video content on select news stories for social media
  • Perform other duties as needed, including proofreading, page design and layout, and audio reporting with KERA News

As a KERA employee:

  • Work in a manner that is consistent with KERA’s mission, vision and values; and maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

This list of job duties is not exhaustive and is subject to regular reviews and updates.

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL:
Qualified applicants must be current students (in an accredited degree program) or have graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship.

We believe a strong organization includes employees from a range of backgrounds, with different skills, experiences, and passions. If you don't meet every job qualification but have some of these skills and think you’re the right person for the job, we'd like to hear from you. Please apply and tell us more about yourself.

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Solid understanding of AP style
  • Knowledge of local newspaper production

BONUS IF YOU BRING:

  • Previous experience working for a daily news organization
  • Familiarity of social media practices
  • Audio, photo or video experience
  • Knowledge of the Denton area
  • Excitement for local news and its role in the community
  • Willingness to try new storytelling tactics

SALARY
$16 per hour paid on a bi-weekly pay period. Interns can expect to work 15-20 hours per week.

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:
The internship is based in Denton, but interns can work a hybrid schedule. Interns should have some availability between 9am and 5pm (M-F) and are expected to work some days in-person at our office in Denton. Hours are flexible, and we will work with you to accommodate class schedules.

The internship will begin around May 11, 2026, and end August 14, 2026. There may be opportunities to extend the internship into the Fall 2026 term.
