Role Summary
As a Senior Accountant at Howard University Hospital, you will serve as a subject matter expert and trusted financial partner — managing the month-end close process, ensuring the integrity of financial data, and providing advanced analytical and compliance support to departmental and institutional leadership. Reporting to the Controller, you will combine technical accounting expertise with strong problem-solving skills to drive accurate, timely reporting and continuous process improvement.

What You’ll Do
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
- Maintain ownership of numerous general ledger accounts and financial statement line items, including all related accounting, spreadsheets, and reconciliations
- Lead the month-end close process including preparation of consolidated financial statements, journal entries, accrual schedules, variance analysis and commentary, and bank reconciliations
- Prepare and coordinate monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts to ensure timely and accurate financial data
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and assess appropriate accounting treatment for complex transactions
- Develop, implement, and maintain programs and tools for financial reporting
Analysis & Advisory
- Analyze financial information and prepare reports for management with interpretive commentary on variances, comparing historical and projected results in a clear and actionable manner
- Develop variable-sensitive business models and compliance or fiscal management tools to support division and departmental activities
- Identify, recommend, and implement performance metrics and benchmarks to surface areas requiring process improvement
- Collaborate with the Controller and CFO to design and implement internal controls
Audit, Tax & Policy
- Provide information, supporting schedules, and work papers to support internal and external audits and tax preparation
- Research accounting issues; write, revise, document, monitor, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and positions
- Interpret and implement accounting rules, fiscal compliance policies, and regulations
Accounting Operations
- Perform and support core accounting functions including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general accounting
- Assure the integrity of financial and statistical data through preparation or review of general ledger entries, reports, schedules, worksheets, reconciliations, and other analysis
- Assume other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area
Compliance & Organizational Expectations
- Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, Howard University Code of Ethics, and Health Sciences Standards of Conduct
- Attend annual and periodic mandatory compliance training including HIPAA Privacy training; actively participate in Compliance Program activities
- Adhere to HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures; maintain strict confidentiality of patients, families, and staff
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant accounting experience
- Advanced understanding of accounting and finance practices and large accounting systems
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Strong conceptual, analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, including knowledge of automated analysis tools and software/online research tools
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results independently under general supervision and to operate effectively in a collaborative team environment
- Strong project management skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities; excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Advanced investigational skills with attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
- Solid customer service skills; anticipates, understands, and addresses internal and external customer needs in a timely manner
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, physicians, and Hospital and University officials

Position Details
Department Finance Reports To Controller FLSA Status Exempt Schedule Full-Time | Monday – Friday Pay & Schedule
This is a full-time, exempt position. Pay range: $87,000 – $98,000/yr, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
