LOCATION: Ideally this position will be at our Chattanooga, TN headquarters or at our Eugene, OR or Yankton, SD locations.  This is an option where the incumbent could work remotely.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) within Astec Digital is dedicated to advancing innovation through simulation, research and development, machine learning, and analytics. The simulation engineer is responsible for performing computer-aided engineering (CAE) simulations to support new product development and ongoing engineering initiatives.

The role emphasizes collaboration, cross-functional teamwork, and the transfer of technical expertise across Astec’s engineering teams. The simulation engineer is expected to develop strong proficiency in CAE methodologies—including model building, analysis, and reporting—using tools such as discrete element method (DEM), multi-body dynamics (MBD), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). These techniques are applied to analyze complex systems, optimize product performance, reduce costs, and shorten time to market.

ATG promotes the adoption and effective use of simulation technology at Astec sites, supporting engineering teams through training, knowledge-sharing, and ongoing assistance. The simulation engineer plays a key role in fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement while exemplifying Astec’s core values and commitment to technical excellence.

Key Deliverables

  • Develop expertise and insight to support Astec engineering teams with simulation and analysis
  • Complete assigned simulation tasks using established templates and best practices
  • Support deep collaboration and knowledge transfer across product teams
  • Empower new product development with virtual ideation, exploration, and optimization
  • Add value with simulation in the areas of product improvement, cost avoidance, and reduced time to market
  • Exemplify Astec’s core values, mission statement and vision statement

 

Key Activities & Responsibilities

§  Prepare CAD/geometry for analysis and generate meshes appropriate to the problem

§  Set up boundary conditions, loads, contacts, materials, and solver settings with review

§  Post-process results and prepare plots, tables, and short technical summaries

§  Interact with engineering teams across Astec to support new and continuous product development

§  Participate in design and project meetings to understand requirements and constraints

§  Support correlation efforts by comparing simulation outputs to test or field observations

§  Follow data management and document control practices for models and reports

§  Support and promote simulation use at local sites

§  Perform research and literature reviews

 

To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:

§  A motivated self-starter with a desire to learn

§  Bachelors degree or higher in engineering (mechanical, aerospace, civil, chemical, etc.)

§  CAE experience using commercial simulation software (ANSYS, Altair, Siemens or similar)

§  Competency in 3D CAD (Solidworks or similar)

§  Working knowledge of programming (C++, Python, Java, or Matlab)

§  Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills

§  Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team

§  Excellent organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills

§  Proficiency with Microsoft Office and online collaboration tools

§  Ability to travel with site visits to subsidiaries, training courses, or conferences 3-6 times per year

§  Ability to work flexible hours when needed to support multiple time zones and urgent projects

§  Experience with PC hardware, network, and IT operation preferred

§  Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
