ABOUT THE POSITION
Under general supervision, the Senior Corporate Accountant is responsible for key activities impacting the consolidated general ledger, with primary ownership and accountability for monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes in assigned areas.
This role prepares and reviews journal entries, performs balance sheet reconciliations, analyzes financial results, and ensures compliance with U.S. GAAP, internal accounting policies, and SOX internal control requirements. The Senior Corporate Accountant partners with accounting leadership and cross‑functional stakeholders to deliver accurate, timely financial reporting while proactively identifying process improvement opportunities and driving efficiencies in close and reporting activities.
Problems faced are varied and may be moderately complex, requiring sound judgment, technical accounting knowledge, and the ability to think critically. The Senior Corporate
Accountant is expected to work independently, take ownership of outcomes, and positively influence others through knowledge sharing, collaboration, and consistent application of best practices.
This position reports to the Manager, Accounting.
LOCATION: This is an onsite position, at our Chattanooga, TN corporate office.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
· Perform and support monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities in accordance with established close calendars, taking ownership of assigned close responsibilities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness
· Prepare, review, and post journal entries for assigned corporate accounting areas, including accruals, reserves, intercompany activity, and other complex transactions in accordance with U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies
· Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations; investigate and resolve reconciling items and monitor account activity to identify unusual trends, risks, or errors
· Analyze financial data, including variance and trend analysis, to understand cost and financial commitments and explain period-over-period changes
· Apply understanding of business processes, drivers, and changes to interpret financial results and identify impacts to the broader organization
· Identify close and accounting issues, communicate findings effectively, and proactively recommend appropriate resolutions to management
· Ensure compliance with internal controls, SOX requirements, and standard operating procedures; exercise sound professional judgment in applying control requirements
· Prepare documentation and provide information in support of internal and external audits and assist with the development, maintenance, and improvement of accounting policies and procedures
· Utilize technology and system capabilities to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and consistency of close and accounting processes, including identifying opportunities for modernization, standardization, and automation
· Build strong working relationships with internal partners to resolve issues, support business objectives, and enhance collaboration across functional areas
· Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced team members; demonstrate intellectual curiosity by continuously deepening understanding of the business and taking ownership of outcomes
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred
· Minimum of 3+ years of progressive accounting experience with a strong emphasis on month‑end close
· Strong knowledge of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applications of accounting principles preferred.
· Experience in a multi‑entity, corporate, or consolidated environment preferred
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software with emphasis on excel skills.
· Experience leveraging ERP systems and technology to improve accounting processes. Experience with Oracle Cloud applications preferred
· Effective verbal and written communication as well as the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team in a fast paced and multi-task environment with a proven track record of successful collaboration and relationship building
· Strong analytical, mathematical, problem solving, organizational, and time management skills.
· Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment on customary and regular basis.
· The individual should be well organized, able to handle multiple tasks and be able to change directions when necessary while working within tight deadlines.
· The individual should demonstrate dependability and have a high degree of accuracy.
