Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator
Howard University Hospital | Washington, DC
Role Summary
As the Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator at Howard University Hospital, you will design, lead, and continually evolve our Trauma Injury Prevention Program — a cornerstone offering of the only DC Level 1 Trauma Center on the campus of a Historically Black University. Reporting to the Director of Trauma Services, you will translate trauma data and community insight into impactful prevention programming, public education, and outreach that reaches youth, families, and partners across the District and the broader Washington, DC region.
You will be the public face of HUH’s injury prevention work — designing curricula, leading workshops and health fairs, building partnerships with community organizations, securing grant funding, and ensuring our program meets the requirements of our Level 1 Trauma Center designation. If you are a public health, social work, or nursing professional with a passion for community-driven prevention and a track record of turning data into action, this is your opportunity to make a measurable difference in the lives of people most affected by traumatic injury.
What You’ll Do
Program Design & Operations

- Use trauma data — including E-codes, ICD-10 coding, ISS, and GCS — to identify high-impact prevention priorities and shape programming
- Conduct research relating to trauma prevention and incorporate evidence-based findings into Center programming
- Ensure the program meets the injury prevention requirements of the American College of Surgeons Level 1 Trauma Center designation
Education & Community Outreach
- Deliver injury prevention programs in a variety of formats — lectures, workshops, health fairs, literature, and youth-focused programming
- Build and sustain collaborative relationships with community organizations, schools, public agencies, and other stakeholders invested in injury prevention
- Represent the Center and Howard University Hospital at health fairs and at regional and national injury prevention conferences
- Learn and apply interventions related to substance use prevention (e.g., SBIRT) where indicated by program scope
Evaluation & Quality Improvement
- Evaluate outcomes of all outreach activities and use findings to refine programming and demonstrate impact to leadership and external partners
- Contribute to the Trauma Service Quality Improvement Program, supporting performance review, data analysis, and process improvement
Funding & Sustainability
- Identify, pursue, and write grant funding applications to sustain and expand injury prevention outreach activities
Compliance & Regulatory
- Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct
- Attend all mandatory compliance training, including HIPAA Privacy training; actively participate in compliance program activities
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patients, families, and staff
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Social Work, Public Health, Nursing, or a related science required
- Five (5) years of comprehensive experience and demonstrated knowledge in the field of injury prevention
- Working knowledge of E-codes, ICD-10 codes, ISS, and GCS scoring
- Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and evaluate trauma awareness and injury prevention programs
- Demonstrated grant writing experience and the ability to prepare competitive funding applications
- Excellent training, presentation, marketing, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- High-level problem-solving skills and the ability to work flexibly, creatively, and independently
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications and Windows-based programs
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Public Health (MPH)
- Experience working within or in support of an ACS-verified Level 1 Trauma Center
- Experience designing and delivering youth-focused injury prevention programming
- Familiarity with substance use screening and brief intervention models (e.g., SBIRT)
What We Offer
- Work-life balance

- Competitive, comprehensive benefit plans including health, disability, vacation, sick leave, and 403(b) retirement plan
