ABOUT THE POSITION

The Senior Electrical Engineer, Smart Services will contribute to the development of engineering capabilities that support Astec’s Smart Services platform. This role centers on electrical engineering for condition monitoring hardware, equipment telematics, and automated inspection technologies. There will be an emphasis on building solutions that can scale across many product lines and applications.

The role works closely with the Astec Digital organization and partners with Electrical Engineering at multiple Astec sites to ensure solutions are technically sound, scalable, and aligned with broader platform objectives.

 

 

DELIVERABLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Design and integrate electrical systems for condition monitoring sensors, networking and telematics hardware, and inspection robotics.

·       Partner closely with the Director of Smart Services to develop scalable, platform‑aligned technical solutions.

·       Collaborate with Controls and Electrical Engineering teams to align Smart Services solutions with enterprise standards and architectures.

·       Write and maintain production‑quality code (e.g., Python, C/C++, or similar) for automation, diagnostics, data handling, or embedded/edge workflows.

·       Evaluate, select, and integrate sensors, edge devices, communications hardware, and power systems used in Smart Services applications.

·       Develop and maintain technical standards, reference designs, and best practices for Smart Services hardware and telemetry communication.

·       Support prototyping, testing, and field validation of new Smart Services technologies.

·       Provide technical input across automation, controls, and software‑enabled systems as needed.

·       Influence platform architecture and technical direction through hands‑on engineering expertise.

 

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, YOUR EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES ARE

·       Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

·       10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, preferably in industrial, mobile equipment, or heavy machinery environments.

·       Strong background in electrical system design, integration, and troubleshooting for hardware‑based products.

·       Experience with embedded systems, controls, telematics, or mobile equipment software integration is strongly preferred.

·       Highly proficient designing and working with many types of sensors, data acquisition, and communications systems.

·       Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering disciplines, including controls, automation, and software teams.

·       Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership and influencing design decisions, without direct people management.

·       Hands‑on experience writing and maintaining code for automation, diagnostics, data handling, or embedded/edge systems.

·       Comfortable operating in early‑stage or evolving technology environments, including prototyping and field validation.

·       Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear, practical solutions.

 

Supervisor and Leadership Expectations

·       This role will not have supervisory or managerial responsibilities.

·       This role will have program management responsibilities.

Travel Requirements

~10-20% of travel to support prototyping
