About the Role
As a Cashier in Food Services at Howard University Hospital, you will be the welcoming face of our cafeteria, operating the register, handling transactions accurately, and providing prompt, courteous service to patients, staff, and visitors. You will operate cash registers in accordance with Hospital policies and procedures while keeping the service area organized and well-stocked.
What You'll Do
- Collect cash and meal tickets and accurately make change for customers as needed.
- Handle transactions responsibly and professionally, never leaving the cash register unattended, and maintain custody of keys and the daily change fund.
- Provide prompt, pleasant, courteous, and respectful service while controlling customer traffic.
- Reconcile cash accurately and prepare precise daily cash receipt reports, accounting for all transactions.
- Assist in setting up food service register counters prior to serving meals.
- Communicate problems and issues to the Supervisor and assist in problem resolution.
- Maintain a clutter-free, clean, and orderly work area.
- Accurately prepare and post menus on boards prior to each meal.
- Stock condiments, flatware, and napkin holders, and assist in restocking throughout meal service.
- Set up and maintain the coffee station and stock beverages.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Two (2) years of work experience as a cashier.
- Familiarity with a food service environment.
- Knowledge of food, safety, and sanitation policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with cash and electronic payment transactions, and the ability to effectively operate a cash register.
- Ability to respond to customers in a prompt, courteous, and pleasant manner.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow direction closely.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to successfully balance multiple tasks.
- Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Basic mathematical and computing skills, capable of performing basic accounting functions without errors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cashier experience in a food services environment.

Pay Range: $19.00 – $30.40 / hour
