Job Summary:

As the CDL Driver I/II, you will ultimately be responsible for safely transporting construction equipment, materials, and heavy machinery to and from job sites while supporting field construction operations. You will operate commercial vehicles, assist construction crews with physical labor, and ensure equipment is maintained and delivered safely and efficiently. As the CDL Driver I/II, your customers are construction crews, project managers, and internal operations teams, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe transportation, operational efficiency, and dependable field support.

Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):

  • Prepare and inspect trucks, trailers, and equipment daily, including oil checks, fueling, greasing, preventative maintenance, trailer cleaning, stocking supplies, and completing maintenance checklists
  • Organize and maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and daily truck preparation
  • Complete Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) and mandatory safety inspections
  • Maintain flatbed trailers and associated hauling equipment
  • Operate construction equipment including backhoes, excavators, loaders, rotomills, rock saws, and similar machinery
  • Load and secure equipment and materials within legal weight limits to maximize transportation efficiency
  • Deliver equipment and materials safely and on schedule to support construction operations
  • Identify unsafe conditions and take appropriate corrective action
  • Determine safe and efficient transportation routes
  • Haul dirt, aggregate, and other construction materials to and from project sites
  • Complete required paperwork including timecards, equipment inspections, DVIRs, and daily logs
  • Maintain complete tool inventory and ensure equipment is clean and operational
  • Identify hazards associated with loading, transporting, and unloading equipment
  • Coordinate daily assignments with dispatch
  • Attend safety meetings and departmental meetings
  • Assist construction crews with labor activities and support other crews as needed
  • Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs

Required Qualifications:

Education, Licensing, and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Valid DOT Medical Card
  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • Forklift Certification preferred
  • Flagger Certification preferred
  • First Aid Certification preferred

Experience

  • Experience operating commercial vehicles and transporting heavy construction equipment
  • Experience operating heavy construction equipment preferred
  • Experience supporting underground utility, telecommunications, or construction operations preferred
  • Experience completing DOT documentation, inspections, and transportation logs preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of DOT regulations and highway rules related to heavy equipment transportation
  • Ability to safely operate commercial vehicles and transport equipment
  • Ability to perform physically demanding construction labor, including digging and material handling
  • Strong mathematical skills for calculating weights, timecards, and related documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with paperwork and inspections
  • Ability to identify equipment hazards and safely load, transport, and unload equipment
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to respond professionally to employees, customers, regulatory agencies, and business partners
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and willingness to work overtime as business needs require

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating backhoes, excavators, loaders, rotomills, and other heavy construction equipment
  • Experience supporting underground utility or telecommunications construction
  • Cross-training in another field position such as Equipment Operator or Fiber Splicer
  • Additional construction equipment certifications

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating commercial vehicles
  • Ability to safely enter and exit commercial vehicles and trailers multiple times throughout the day
  • Ability to frequently lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and perform physically demanding construction work
  • Ability to safely operate commercial vehicles and heavy equipment while maintaining situational awareness
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow
  • Ability to work around construction hazards, loud noise, diesel fumes, and active job sites
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, irregular schedules, and occasional overnight travel as business needs require
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, reflective vests, and steel-toed boots
