ROLE SUMMARY
Howard University Hospital is seeking a LAN Technician I to serve as the on-site face of Information Technology for our clinicians, staff, and care teams. In this hands-on role, you are the single point of contact for in-person support — installing, configuring, diagnosing, repairing, and upgrading the computers, mobile devices, peripherals, and clinical equipment our providers rely on every day. You will handle Tier II escalations from the Service Desk, manage access requests, and provide "smart hands" support for basic network and server hardware. If you enjoy solving problems face-to-face and want your technical work to directly support patient care at a nationally recognized academic medical center, this is your opportunity.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Serve as the on-site point of contact for requests, incidents, and access-related support at any of the organization's locations.
- Interact directly with customers to provide face-to-face technical support, training, and instruction.
- Install, configure, upgrade, and provide day-to-day administration and support for the compute environment.
- Support the administration and configuration of endpoint devices including laptops, tablets, desktops, peripherals, and clinical devices.
- Conduct site surveys; assess and document current site equipment, configurations, and user requirements.
- Perform access management and provisioning for application and system access, and partner with end users and support staff to configure, troubleshoot, and maintain access-related issues.
- Troubleshoot problem areas in person, by telephone, or via email in a timely and accurate manner, and provide end-user assistance where required.
- Maintain an accurate understanding of operational time commitments and remain available to support project-based implementations.
- Follow standard operating procedures, along with change and release management processes, for software and hardware deployments and transitions.
- Facilitate conversations across employees, vendors, and other support teams while implementing or upgrading devices and software.
- Partner with the Project Management Office on device refresh and general device deployment activities.
- Participate in the creation of detailed work breakdown structures for the implementation of automated and manual provisioning configurations.
- Complete necessary internal reporting and report status to various levels of management and client representatives.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Good understanding of computer hardware and peripherals.
- Good understanding of computer systems characteristics, features, and integration capabilities.
- General knowledge of information systems, hardware platforms, enterprise software applications, and outsourced systems management.
- Good understanding of Android and Apple technologies.
- Solid understanding of HIPAA and a commitment to maintaining patient, family, and staff confidentiality.
- Ability to respond quickly to multiple, competing priorities while delivering excellent service.
- Effective and proactive communicator; self-driven, independent, and detail-oriented.
- Ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Highly organized critical thinker with a positive, service-minded attitude.
- Ability to work well in a team-based management approach with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to assume responsibility and exercise authority over assigned work functions.
- Ability to execute in high-stress situations and to seek out opportunities for learning and improvement.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and to be on call after hours.
- Ability to sit, walk, and stand frequently throughout the shift, and to occasionally bend, squat, kneel, climb, twist, and lift or carry up to 35 lbs. (heavier loads with equipment assistance).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology.
- A+ Certification or similar technical certification.
- ITIL v3 Foundations certification.
- Prior desktop or field support experience in a hospital or other healthcare setting.
