ROLE SUMMARY
Howard University Hospital is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join our Facilities Management team. In this role you will inspect, install, repair, modify, and maintain wood, drywall, floor and ceiling tile, metal studs, cabinets, and doors across the hospital — keeping our physical environment safe, functional, and ready for the patients, families, and staff who depend on it every day. WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Construct, repair, alter, install, and maintain wooden and metal structures throughout the hospital.
- Construct and install window frames, door frames, windows, doors, inside walls, ceramic tile floors, ceilings, ceiling tile and grid, counters, closets, cabinets, shelves, casings, and wood foundations; install and finish drywall and similar structures; and lay beam.
- Read and accurately interpret drawings, blueprints, specifications, and single line drawings necessary to complete the work.
- Operate and maintain hand, stationary, and portable power tools of the carpentry trade, shop woodworking equipment, and standard measuring equipment such as rulers, levels, carpenter's square, and laser measuring and leveling devices.
- Calculate the quantity of materials needed and assemble the proper tools and materials for each job.
- Ensure work is completed in an acceptable manner, observing the appropriate trade practice and safety procedures.
- Support the Health Sciences Compliance Program and the Howard University Code of Ethics, complete annual compliance and HIPAA privacy training, and maintain the confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities related and appropriate to the position and area.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years of work experience in carpentry at the Journeyman level.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the methods, techniques, and safe use of tools used in carpentry and ceramic tile installation.
- Ability to read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
- Familiarity with computer applications such as PC spreadsheets, and with current codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., OSHA, Fire and Life Safety).
- Ability to work individually or as part of a team to complete projects on time.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- High attention to detail; excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with department and medical staff.
- Availability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled; the hospital operates continuously and the organization reserves the right to alter working hours based on need.
- Physical requirements: frequent walking and standing; occasional sitting, bending, and squatting; occasional lifting and carrying of 0–35 lbs., and of 35 lbs. or more using equipment.

POSITION DETAILS
Division Facilities Management Department Plant Operations Reports To Director, Facilities Management FLSA Status Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit Local 2094 — Grade 2094-18 Schedule Monday - Friday | 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM Weekend Requirement Weekends and Holidays as Needed PAY
This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Howard University Hospital and Local 2094. Pay is set by the Local 2094 wage scale for Grade 2094-18.
Hourly base pay range: $24.07 – $38.52
Placement within the range is determined in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Shift and weekend differentials may apply in addition to base pay, as provided under the agreement.
