A top client is searching for an experienced Senior Data Scientist, Health Analytics to help them build a new standalone health plan analytics product that tracks health plan performance, plan design recommendations, and point solution effectiveness for self-insured employers and their broker/consultant partners. This is a net-new, individual-contributor role responsible for the technical and analytical foundation of that product. As the product proves out in the market, this position is expected to grow into a team lead role, hiring and directing additional data scientists and analysts.
As the Sr. Data Scientist, Health Analytics, you will:
• Serve as the founding technical contributor on our new health plan analytics product — owning the analytics methodology end-to-end, from data pipeline design through client-facing outputs and insights.
• Design and build risk-stratification, plan-performance benchmarking, and point-solution effectiveness models using medical/pharmacy claims, biometric/lab, and health risk assessment (Know Your Number® disease risk questionnaire) data.
• Consult with internal and external teams to identify opportunities and deliver reliable analytical solutions.
• Work with and interpret medical and pharmacy claims data, biometric/lab data, and HRA data for risk mitigation opportunities, applying deep knowledge of data standards such as ICD, CPT, and NDC codes.
• Use Microsoft SQL to collate, transform, and query data from various sources, including large and complex claims data files.
• Use R, R Markdown, and Python to build both ad hoc and routine reports and product-ready analytics from claims, lab, and other wellness data.
• Lead software developers on maintenance and enhancements to population health management aggregate reports and evidence-based results reports that drive outreach to at-risk participants in our wellness and disease management programs.
• Work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires identifying problems and solutions for our internal development team and external data providers.
• Effectively communicate data reports, trends, and analysis with internal and external customers regularly, including the executive suite.
• Lead the implementation of claims data integration with the Account Management team.
• Design processes and workflows that drive internal efficiencies.
• As the analytics product scales, build the business case for and lead the buildout of a data science team, hiring and directing additional analysts/data scientists.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Health Informatics, Analytics, Data Science, Advanced Mathematics, Statistics, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
• 7+ years of relevant experience working with health care or related data, with a strong understanding of medical claims, pharmacy claims, ICD, CPT, NDC codes, biometric/lab data, health plan data (plan design, eligibility, enrollment, cost and utilization trends), and other wellness data.
• Demonstrated experience building predictive models (e.g., risk stratification, cost/utilization forecasting, or outcomes prediction) using health care data.
• Proficient with, and on the leading edge of, AI tool use for data science work — comfortable using AI-assisted coding, modeling, and analysis tools to accelerate development and stay ahead of how the discipline is evolving.
• Proficiency in R and R Markdown required; strong working proficiency in Python required for product and pipeline development (previously listed as a plus — now core to the role given the product-build scope).
• Working SQL proficiency for querying and transforming data across Microsoft SQL.
• Experience with health plan performance analytics, benchmarking, or point-solution ROI measurement strongly preferred.
• Prior experience building or scaling an analytics product — not just producing reports against an existing one — is a strong plus.
• Able to work independently and to establish, monitor, and achieve goals with minimal supervision, while operating as a founding contributor on a new product with evolving requirements.
• Able to communicate frequently and clearly with internal and external customers, including Sales, Account Managers, Health Coaches, and Software Developers.
• Able to work on problems of a diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
• Able to analyze problems and strategize solutions in a creative manner.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Organized and able to adhere to timelines and schedules.
• Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, sometimes under tight deadlines.
• Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as part of a team with enthusiasm, initiative, and creativity.
• Knowledge of SAS scripting is beneficial.
• Role progression: Team Lead, Data Science → Chief Data Scientist.
