Accupac is hiring for an R&D Develompment Chemist to join our team at our Lakewood, NJ. location.

Basic Job Functions:
The R&D Development Chemist position leads the development of new and existing products for reformulation. This is a role that helps convey Cobalt Labs’ creativity and technical expertise to potential and existing customers. The candidate will be responsible for creating new formulation concepts and prototypes to meet designated briefs from our customers and help proactively pitch to new customers. The R&D Development Chemist has experience with a wide variety of product formulation and testing protocols for cosmetic, OTC and medical device products across Skin, Body, Hair, and Oral care categories. The candidate will compound batches and perform stability testing according to SOPs procedures. This is a team-oriented role that would require strong communication and people skills.

Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Design, develop, execute, and support on time commercialization of new personal care, oral care, and OTC drug products.
  • Identify raw materials and technologies suitable for product development work.
  • Set up and run experiments in the lab using specific instrumentation to analyze samples.
  • Manage and conduct stability testing according to customer protocols.
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain lab equipment and instrumentation.
  • Develop and refine formulas with respect to a customer’s brief.  Help with resolution of stability issues as applicable.
  • Enter testing data and use specific company software programs.
  • Assist with lab specific programs and raw material inventory including maintaining a clean lab environment and inventory.
  • Work closely with the internal Accupac cross-function team to bring projects through to commercialization.

Minimum Requirements of the Job:
  • 3-5 years of experience with hands on product development
  • Experience in oral care formulation (toothpaste or mouthwash) preferred but not required.
  • Experience with OTC and Medical devices preferred but not required.
  • Color matching experience preferred but not required for Personal care formulations.
  • Proven ability to invent, innovate and strong ability to design and implement experiments as needed.
  • Monitor the quality and conformity of formulas.
  • Ensure traceability and accuracy of lab trials with proper documentation in laboratory notebooks.
  • Communicate any formulation and/or stability issues to Director.
  • The ability to work autonomously on multiple projects is needed.  Under minimal supervision, complete tasks as directed.
  • Respond to customer requests in a timely fashion.
  • Effectively work in cross functional teams with members from product development, project management, process engineering, marketing, sales, safety, packaging, and manufacturing operations.
  • Clear and direct communication skills as well as professional social skills. 
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and ability to think outside of the box.
  • Perform all laboratory work in a safe manner and comply with all regulations, safety precautions, PPE requirements.  Participate and follow training as required.
  • Proficient in MS Windows, Excel, Word, and Power point.

  • Able to walk/stand on concrete floors up to eight hours each workday.
  • Able to hear/execute clear speech, in person and over the telephone.
  • Able to bend/stoop repeatedly.
  • Able to climb step stools and maintain balance.
  • Able to lift/carry items up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to push/pull items up to 75 pounds.
  • Able to hear phones ring, alarms sound through ambient noise and everyday conversation.
  • Possess color vision.

Educational and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related science.
  • 3-5 years of experience with hands on product development.
  • Experience in oral care formulation (toothpaste or mouthwash), OTC, and medical devices preferred but not required.

Minimum Requirements of the Job:
Possess an understanding of laboratory safety requirements, working with laboratory chemicals and the MSDS system.
Possess a general understanding of chemical test methods and chemical instrumentation and basic wet chemistry techniques. 
Possess effective interpersonal and organizational skills.
Possess fluency in written and spoken English.
Possess the ability to use personal computers for word processing and data manipulation and experience with Microsoft word and excel.
Possess the ability to work on many tasks simultaneously. 
Possess the ability to use common sense and good judgment when faced with decisions during testing.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or a 2-year associate degree in a technical / science field.  Must have some chemistry lab work experience from high school or college.
Prior experience in a laboratory environment – Research & Development, Quality Assurance or Quality Control is desirable.
Relevant experience working with personal care, hair care, skin care or oral care products is desirable.
