    Building Engineer - II:
    • Performs daily routine maintenance rounds and inspections of mechanical rooms, equipment, machinery, buildings and facilities within assigned areas for proper operation and working condition. Tests and inspects emergency generators
    • Operates, monitors and maintains central plant equipment, steam system and chilled water system. Maintains, pumps, compressors, and associated machinery in accordance with SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), internal requirements, manufacture’s specifications and safety policies.
    • Medical Gas & Vacuum system. Inspects, tests, and repairs hospital equipment, and appliances as assigned
    • Performs assigned preventive maintenance on equipment, machinery, buildings and facilities.  Completes work order records and required documentation of maintenance activity.
    • Determines type and extent of malfunctions and adjusts, repairs or replaces parts or components, reassembles and tests for proper operation.
    • Reports more serious problems to supervisor for instructions or maintenance scheduling while following safety protocol
    • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.  The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.
    • Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
    • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
    • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
    • Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities
    • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
    • Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.
    • Demonstrated mechanical skills to handle equipment to avoid causing injuries to self and others;
    • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical, carpentry, plumbing and other technical skills;
    • Ability to troubleshoot in order to determine exact problems and tackle them accordingly;
    • Must have good customer service skills and an empathetic nature when dealing with customer’s repair issues;
    • Ability to handle a variety of changing duties resulting from the complexities of equipment;
    • Ability to work within limits and standards set by building codes and standards;
    • Capable of working under emergency conditions;
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills;  Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
    • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of hospital policies and procedures;
    • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the safe use, handling and storage of hazardous materials used to carry out duties; and
    • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the locations and operation of equipment, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems and devices assigned to the department with an emphasis on infection control, fire safety and emergency equipment and systems.

    A qualified candidate will possess:
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Minimum 3 years’ experience required. Successful completion of an approved and accredited Trade School or apprenticeship program, DC 3rd   Class Certification
    • Valid driver’s license, EPA Section 608 Universal Certification, Journeyman license(plumbing, electrical, mechanical)  DC Class 8a or 8b Operator’s License
    • ASSE 6040 Maintenance Personnel Program Certification within first six months of employment
