    The Air Conditioning Mechanic 1st Class:
    Under the general supervision of the Foreman, assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, cooling, and humidification equipment, related controls and auxiliaries. This position is shift responsible according to seniority.
     
    Assists in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of HVAC/R equipment, including but not limited to steam turbines, steam absorption units, centrifugal water chillers, cooling towers, pumps, steam pressure reducing stations, valves, piping systems, walk in refrigerators and freezers, display cases, water coolers, air filters, chemical purifying, dehumidification, humidification, exhaust systems, air handler units, fans, and HVAC/R control systems.
     
    Measures, cuts and bends tubing according to specifications in the work order.
     
    Insulates pipes and ductwork.
     
    Monitors a highly complex control system which regulates climatic conditions throughout the entire health center.
     
    Performs day to day preventative maintenance working alone or assisting other mechanics.
     
    Prepares accurate records for preventative maintenance.
     
    Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the central chiller plant and HVAC/R systems health center wide.

    Promotes adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
     
    Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
     
    Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
     
    Actively participates in Health Sciences Compliance Program activities.
     
    Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
     
    Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.

    Required Skills

    Qualified candidates will possess:
    High school graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
     
    Two (2) years experience in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
     
    Graduation from a trade school in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration can be substituted for two years work experience.
     
    First Class DC Steam Engineers License.
     
    Must have a working knowledge using a computerized maintenance management system preferred.
     
    Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
     
    Must be able to work alternating shifts, overtime, holidays and weekends.
     
    Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift (minimally 50lbs), climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, pull, push, reach, write, speak, hear, see, calculate and organize for extended periods of time.
